Things to do in Taunton: history, riverside time and local culture

Plan a Taunton outing around the castle museum, Vivary Park, the River Tone and local performances.

Explore Somerset history at the castle

The Museum of Somerset occupies Taunton Castle on Castle Green. Its displays provide a starting point for exploring the county's history, with changing exhibitions and a programme of activities. Admission is free, with donations welcomed. Check the museum's current visitor and event information when deciding how much time to allow.

The museum publishes access information, including lifts and arrangements for its limited accessible parking. There is no general visitor parking within the site. A museum visit can be combined with Castle Green and nearby shops without needing to fit several outlying attractions into the same outing.

Pause in Vivary Park

Vivary Park offers a green break just beyond the Upper High Street gates. Its bandstand, fountain and mature planting give a different pace to a town-centre visit. The official park page is a useful starting point for entrances and closing information, especially when planning a late-afternoon walk in winter.

Keep the outing simple: a park visit, a browse in the central streets and a meal or coffee can make a comfortable half-day. Mr Miles on High Street and Shoreditch White on Corporation Street are two central food-and-drink options. Ask individual businesses about menus, dietary requirements and current opening before planning around a particular stop.

Follow the Tone at your own pace

Coal Orchard and French Weir provide starting points for exploring Taunton beside the River Tone. Choose the length and surface that suit the group, allowing for wet weather and changing river conditions. A riverside pause can add variety to a central visit without turning the day into a long walking itinerary.

If arriving from a village, plan the journey back as well as the first stop. A map can help connect the river, Castle Green and the shopping streets, but a short distance does not establish step-free access. Use venue information and current local travel details for any specific access requirements.

Choose music, theatre or a workshop

CICCIC, at Memorial Hall on Paul Street, hosts live music, comedy, exhibitions and creative activities. Taunton Minster has concerts alongside its worship and visitor programme. Tacchi-Morris Arts Centre, in Monkton Heathfield, offers performances and community classes outside the town centre.

These venues have distinct programmes and locations, so book the particular performance or session that interests you. What's On brings together our current selection of dates, with direct organiser links. For an evening visit, check the return journey and any access needs before confirming the booking.
