Allow time for the side streets
Fore Street, North Street, East Street and the High Street form a useful central shopping area, but leave time for the smaller streets too. Bath Place is home to Brendon Books, an independent shop with new and second-hand books, maps and an ordering service. Its author events give another reason to return beyond a single purchase.
On Bridge Street, Taunton Stamp Shop offers stamps, coins, banknotes and collecting accessories, alongside model vehicles. A specialist shop is worth contacting before a trip for a particular item or collection enquiry. These different stops make a browse more interesting than following only the largest shopping frontages.
Visit the independent market
Taunton Independent Market brings food, crafts, gifts and other artisan traders to Castle Green and surrounding streets. Its dated event pages set out each advertised visit, with separate information for businesses interested in trading. Use the current calendar rather than assuming the same day or hours apply throughout the year.
The market is outdoors and subject to the weather. Combine it with nearby shops or a food stop, and check the organiser's updates before setting out. Our What's On page includes a selection of upcoming market dates alongside performances and other local events.
Find flowers and locally made gifts
County Flowers is based at Redlake Drive in Blackbrook, with bouquets and arrangements for gifts, weddings, funerals and business displays. Outside the centre, The Flower Tree grows seasonal flowers at Hillcommon. Explain the occasion, date and collection or delivery needs when making an enquiry.
Boo Cottage Botanicals makes skincare at West Bagborough, including soaps, balms and cleansers. Flowers by Wendy is based farther out at Stogumber and advertises deliveries to Taunton and West Somerset. These are separate village businesses, so confirm opening, delivery coverage or collection arrangements rather than expecting a central high-street shop.
Include practical specialist stops
The Bicycle Chain has a Taunton store on Priory Bridge Road, while ND Cycles is at Priory Way Industrial Estate. Both give cyclists a reason to look beyond the main shopping streets, with bikes, equipment and services described on their own websites. For a repair or specialist product, ask about availability and booking first.
A shopping visit can include a coffee or lunch rather than a long list of purchases. Mr Miles on High Street combines a tea room with tea, coffee and gifts; Shoreditch White is on Corporation Street. Use the directory's category and area filters to find nearby businesses and combine errands at a pace that suits you.
