Start around Castle Green
Taunton's centre is a meeting place for Somerset history, everyday shopping and life beside the River Tone. Castle Green is a useful starting point, with the Museum of Somerset inside Taunton Castle and central streets close by. The museum introduces the wider county through its collections, giving a local outing a story beyond the buildings themselves.
Our home illustration shows the Market House, while this guide's cover depicts the castle entrance. From the centre, Fore Street, North Street, East Street and the High Street offer different routes into the town's shops and services. Bath Place is worth a detour for independent businesses, including Brendon Books.
Make time for the river and the park
The River Tone gives Taunton another focus, with Coal Orchard and French Weir providing places to begin exploring the riverside. Choose a short stretch and a convenient return route rather than assuming every path makes a complete accessible circuit. The things-to-do guide brings together ideas for combining time outside with a town-centre stop.
Vivary Park is reached from Upper High Street, with a bandstand, fountain and established trees forming a different setting from the shopping streets. It is close enough to combine with central errands or a cafe visit. The official visitor page explains entrances and daily closing arrangements.
Look beyond the central streets
Taunton's neighbourhoods include Priorswood, Rowbarton, Galmington, Holway, Blackbrook and Staplegrove. Their businesses and community spaces are part of everyday local life, alongside the centre's shops and offices. Search by area as well as business type when looking for a nearby service or planning several errands.
Trull, Bishops Hull, Norton Fitzwarren, Cheddon Fitzpaine, Monkton Heathfield and Bishops Lydeard have their own communities and businesses. Our directory also includes firms based farther out, such as West Buckland and Stogumber, where the local connection is relevant. Each listing keeps its actual base clear, rather than implying every business has a central Taunton premises.
Use the right local connection
Somerset Council is the unitary authority for services such as planning, council tax and libraries. Taunton Town Council has a separate local role. Start with the relevant council's own service information when making an enquiry, particularly for a property in a surrounding parish.
For leisure and local connections, the Museum of Somerset, CICCIC, Taunton Minster and Tacchi-Morris Arts Centre offer different programmes. Our What's On page selects current dates with organiser links, while the directory covers shops, trades, professional services, pet care and community organisations throughout the area.
